Church of Our Lady, Brugge


As you approach Brugge you won't be able to miss the tower of Our Lady's Church. This churches main attraction is its medieval style and the art work that can be viewed inside. The church went through many different styles of architecture throughout the centuries but in 1900 the church was renovated and this is where the original medieval style came to the for. The tower is the most noticeable feature of the church reaching a height of 122meters. The reason the church gets so many visitors however, is the presence of Michelangelo's Madonna and the tombstones of Mary of Burgundy and her father Charles the Bold.

- Michelangelo's Madonna:
This marble sculpture is situated in the sacrament chapel and is the only piece by the Italian to have left Italy. It was made for the cathedral of Sienna but the two merchants Jan and Alexander Moscroen brought it to Brugges after a business trip to Italy in 1506.

- Tombs of the Dukes of Burgundy:
Mary of Bugundy and her father Charles the Bolds tombstones are also in this fabulous church. Mary reigned over at the end of the 15th century and died in 1482 in a horse ridding accident. Her father died in 1477 in Nancy, France. 1n 1550 his remains where brought to Brugge and laid next to his daughter. The tombs were decorated in the late gothic style and early renaissance style.
